Certificate of Veterinary Inspection for importing dogs
This page helps veterinarians and individuals meet the requirements of dogs entering California. You can submit a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) to meet state requirements.
What you need to know
Animals that need a CVI to enter California
- All dogs need a CVI.
- Many livestock species require a CVI to enter California (even if they are intended as pets). Visit CDFA Entry Requirements for more information.
Important: This requirement does not apply to cats.
What does the law say?
According to California Health & Safety Code § 121720, anyone bringing dogs into California must:
- Obtain a health certificate from a licensed and accredited veterinarian within 10 days before importation.
- Send the certificate to the county health department where the dog will be sold or to the county where the new owner lives.
Where should CVIs be sent?
Use this form to send CVI’s to local county health departments. This form is the official method to submit CVIs.
Do not send CVIs to CDFA or CDPH. These agencies do not process or forward CVIs to counties.
