Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my car on the premises?

Yes, we provide a parking lot area and parking permits for residents with their vehicles. You must have:

  • A current driver's license.
  • A current registration.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • A vehicle in good operating order.
Do I have to be a resident of California to reside at a Veterans Home of California?

Yes, you need to be a California resident.

Do I have to be at least 55 years old to apply for admission?

Yes, but we may waive the age requirement if you are a veteran experiencing homelessness or disabled. The average age of veterans living at our veterans homes, at all levels of care, is 73. If you wish to be considered for admission and meet the requirements, please submit your application.

Do Veterans Homes of California have laundry facilities?
Yes. Washing machines and dryers are available at all locations.
How do I apply for admission to a Veterans Home of California?
For steps on how to apply for admission, visit Applying for a CalVet Veterans Home.
How many personal belongings can I bring with me?

Each room has limited storage space. Additional storage space may be available. Check with the specific home for further details.

Note: All personal equipment must meet health, safety, and fire codes.
How much will it cost me to become a resident?
No veteran will be denied admission due to a lack of income. For those veterans who have income, state law requires that they pay a percentage of their income as resident fees. Resident fees help reduce the amount of state tax dollars needed to operate Veterans Homes, thus allowing the California Department of Veterans Affairs to care for a greater number of veterans.
I am married. Can my spouse become a resident?

Your spouse may be admitted with certain restrictions. They must:

  • Be married to and living with you for at least one year.
  • Submit a separate, complete application.
  • Meet the requirements for admission at the residential/domiciliary, intermediate, or skilled nursing level of care.
I have a pet dog and a cat. May I bring them with me?
No pets are allowed at the Veterans Home. Service animals are allowed, however. If you have questions, contact the Veterans Home's admissions office for information.
I have medical coverage through a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). Should I keep this coverage?
If you keep your HMO, you may be required to access all services through your HMO, except for urgent and emergency care. If the Home is not within your HMO’s service area, you must unenroll from your HMO.
I want to learn more about long-term care options and other resources. Where can I look?
Please visit the Department of Aging’s Find Licensed Services webpage to learn more.
If I am denied admission to a Veterans Home of California, what are my rights?
You must file a written appeal with the Home’s administrator, stating the reasons you feel you should be admitted to the Home. If this appeal is denied and you wish to escalate your appeal, you can initiate your second appeal by contacting the California Veterans Board, P.O. Box 942895, Sacramento, CA 94295-0001. The Board will provide you with an appeal form if you did not receive one from the Home.
Is there a waiting list to become a Veterans Home of California resident?

While there are waiting lists for most levels of care, the waiting for skilled nursing care may be prolonged for some homes. The best way to assure future access to skilled nursing care is to enter the Home at a more independent level of care, such as RCFE or DOM. If you’re considering one of our Veterans Homes, we urge you to apply well before the need becomes urgent.

To obtain the current status of vacancies, call the Admissions Office at the Veterans Home you are considering for residency.

May I have visitors at a Veterans Home of California?
Yes. We encourage visits by your friends and relatives. Home staff will be glad to assist you in arranging these visits.
May I visit a Veterans Home of California before applying for admission?
Yes. We urge all potential residents to visit our campuses first.
Will I be admitted if I have medical problems that require special care?
The Veterans Homes can accommodate many care needs. You can contact the Veterans Home's admissions office for general information, but you must complete the application process for a formal determination of whether the necessary services are available.
Will I have a private room?
A very limited number of private rooms are available – based on seniority – at most Home locations. All rooms are private at the Redding and Fresno Homes.
